Accreditation Ensures Quality

Accreditation ensures that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. Accrediting agencies develop evaluation criteria and conduct peer evaluations to assess whether or not those criteria are met. The U.S. Secretary of Education recognizes accrediting agencies that the Secretary determines to be reliable authorities as to the quality of education or training provided by the institutions of higher education and the higher education programs they accredit. There are two basic types of educational accreditation: institutional referring to an entire institution, and specialized or programmatic referring to the evaluation of programs, departments, or schools which usually are parts of a total collegiate or other postsecondary institution.
